Overview

This series is a compilation of Flash Tips and Tricks tutorials that have been featured in our LearnFlash.com newsletter from July through September of 2007. This collection of Flash tutorials is a must have for any Flash enthusiast. Some of these tutorials may be from previous Tips and Tricks Series.

Detailed Video Descriptions

  1 - Display (Running Time - 7:43)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a custom display that can be added to any monitor. This is a great effect to wow customers to your site or place as a banner. Simple to create. Only motion tweens and layers, no actionscript.

  2 - Shape Tween (Running Time - 8:08)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to use the shape tween to morph objects into one another. You will be animating a simple counting sequence using text that has been broken apart.

  3 - Scroll Text (Running Time - 7:59)
In this tutorial, you will learn a very important lesson on building and using the scrolling text box. You will learn to assign a Scrollbar from the components list in Flash and how to wrap text within the box.

  4 - Solar System (Running Time - 11:06)
Learning to animate along a path can be fun. In this tutorial, you will learn how to animate along a path to get the effect of an animated solar system. You will knock them dead in science class.

  5 - Creating A Flyout Menu (Running Time - 20:37)
Everybody wants to create their own animated menus that suddenly appear out of nowhere when they hover over a button . . . don't they? Well, if they do, then Craig Campbell is here to show them how!

  6 - Internet Explorer Fix (Running Time - 13:23)
If you've been working with Flash at all recently, then you've probably noticed an annoying little quirk when trying to view your Flash files in Internet Explorer, where you have to click to "activate" your Flash file in the browser before you can interact with it. Fortunately, there's a way to get around this little quirk, and in this tutorial, trainer Craig Campbell will show you how.

  7 - Creating a Custom Scroller (Running Time - 18:56)
In this tutorial, Craig will show you how to make your own scrollbar from scratch that will cause a text field to scroll up and down as you drag the scrollbar around.

  8 - Creating a Coin-Flip Button (Running Time - 18:29)
In this tutorial, Craig will show you how to create a round button in your Flash file that flips over when you hover your mouse over it and then flips over again when you move your mouse away.

  9 - Focus Change Animation (Running Time - 9:30)
In this tutorial, trainer Craig Campbell will show you how to create a sense of depth in your animations by shifting focus from one object to another.

  10 - Debugging Actionscript Errors (Running Time - 11:48)
Have you ever had any pesky ActionScript errors that you just couldn't figure out? Ever had a Flash file that wouldn't work, and you just couldn't figure out why? Well, stop your worrying! In this tutorial, Craig Campbell will walk you through a couple steps that should help you as you're trying to debug your ActionScript code.

  11 - Basic Slideshow (Running Time - 15:44)
In this tutorial, Craig Campbell shows you how to create a basic slideshow from scratch by importing pictures into their own keyframes and creating "next" and "previous" buttons so the user can cycle through the images.

  12 - Basic Animation Slideshow (Running Time - 15:57)
In this tutorial, Craig builds on the previous tip by adding animated transitions between each of the images in the slideshow.

13 - "Introduction to Actionscript 3.0" Preview (The Actions Panel) (Running Time - 11:07)
When dealing with ActionScript code, it's a good idea to learn how to get around in the Actions panel. In this video, Craig gives you a quick tour of the panel and its features.

14 - "Introduction to Actionscript 3.0" Preview (Events for Multiple Buttons) (Running Time - 7:58)
In this video, Craig will demonstrate how to reuse the functions we created in a previous video in order to trigger MOUSE_OVER and MOUSE_OUT events for multiple buttons.

15 - "Introduction to Actionscript 3.0" Preview (Destination Animation) (Running Time - 12:08)
In this video, Craig will demonstrate how to get your object to move to a specific point on the stage.

  16 - Improved Animated Slideshow (Running Time - 12:16)
In the last Slideshow tip, where we created an animated slideshow, we ended up with 64 frames of content on the main layer of our Flash file. In this tip, Craig shows you how to achieve the same effects in only 5 frames by putting all of the animations inside movie clips.

  17 - Motion Guide (Running Time - 5:57)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to animate a graphic on a guided path using the motion guide. You will also learn how to place your graphic or movieclip on the correct points of the motion guide.

  18 - Slideshow Mask Animation (Running Time - 10:42)
The previous few tips have seen a couple of slideshows created that consisted of images fading in onto the stage. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create more complicated transitions using mask animations.

  19 - Custom Cursor (Running Time - 6:22)
Create a custom cursor with your own image by simply using action script. This is a popular flash effect and adds a level of interactive fun that will WOW your users.

  20 - Loading External Images (Running Time - 15:37)
Importing images into your .fla file to create a slideshow is certainly an easy way to do things, requiring very minimal ActionScript, but if you have numerous images, then your slideshow file size will start to get pretty big, which will leave your users twiddling their thumbs, waiting for the site to load. In this video, you will learn how to import images dynamically using ActionScript, making the load time much more bearable.

21 - Buttons For Dynamic Slideshows (Running Time - 14:41)
Our last tutorial took us only so far into the world of making a dynamic slideshow. In this tutorial, you will learn the code that you need to add to the buttons in order to get this type of slideshow to function properly.

22 - Invisible Buttons and Sound (Running Time - 9:23)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to command sounds with invisible buttons. Add invisible buttons around objects that become interactive, and play sounds and songs.

  23 - Movie Clip Loader (Running Time - 19:39)
The MovieClipLoader class allows you to keep track of loading information for dynamically loaded assets. In this tutorial, you will learn how to use the MovieClipLoader class to create a preloader for your slideshow images.

24 - "Using Flash Templates to Build Websites" Preview (The Template) (Running Time - 8:13)
In this video, Craig walks you through the template that he will be using for the rest of the series, and he will give you an overview of the kinds of things that can be customized.

25 - "Using Flash Templates to Build Websites" Preview (Editing Links) (Running Time - 12:45)
Some of the buttons in our template do not actually link to anything, and even if they did, we would most likely want to change the destination, so in this video, Craig will walk you through the process of changing and customizing links and button behavior.

  26 - Animating Dynamic Images (Running Time - 9:11)
Just because you're loading images dynamically now doesn't mean you don't want them to be animated. In this tutorial, Craig will teach you how to use the Tween class to animate your images onto the stage using ActionScript.

4. ** BONUS ** ($97.00 Value) Web Design webinar entitled: "Building Websites With Real Value - How to Find Clients Who Will Gladly Pay You $10,000 Or More For Their Website"

Stop settling for $500 to $1000 web design projects and start making some real money. More importantly, start building a real business. You know, the kind that will allow you to take some time off and still have money coming in. The kind of business where you are building an asset that can be sold at some point in the future.

If you are tired of working long hours grinding away in front the computer just to make the same money as a Starbucks barista, then you will be very interested in the following information.

Each week I host a webinar where I show designers the exact skills you need to develop to take your business to the next level. For some, that means being able to go from part-time to full-time. How nice would it be to trade in your day job for a successful business where you call the shots. For others that is means getting your very first client.

I even show the pros how to grow their business. Just last week we had a guy that fit in that top 1% category. He is charging $30,000, on the low end, for a website. He was making more money than almost all of the other 22 attendees combined.

I opened his eyes to some new ideas, one of which has the potential to double his already successful business. That is the thing about the top 1% - they are always anxious to learn something new. He could have easily passed on the opportunity to attend the webinar based on his success, but there he was soaking up new ideas to grow his business.

How To Attend The Webinar

The webinar is a 2 hour presentation plus a live Q and A session. Most of these sessions last over three hours.

We use Webex to facilitate the webinars. This allows you to watch and listen to the live presentation via the web. We use the chat feature to create a very interactive experience. I am constantly asking questions and polling the audience. This has resulted in some great sessions allowing you to learn from other attendees also.
